Hello,

I have decided to attend MUL in October. It was a tough decision to make but I hope I don't regret it.
I was wondering what the reputation of MUL is like in Poland and also if there are a lot of racists and if the city if safe to live.

Thanks in advance!

Hello everyone,

Right now I am on my 2nd year at MUL. I noticed the last thread was in 2009 and their program has changed a little since then, mainly their examinations and a few courses. If anyone has questions, feel free to ask :)

General Lodz advice

Hi there!
I am currently a student based in the UK, and am hoping to apply to Lodz 4-year MD for September admission.
Obviously moving to Poland is a big commitment as I currently speak no Polish.
I have some questions I am hoping current students will answer for me please...

1) Is it easy to fit in, are there plenty of non-polish speaking students?
2) What is the schedule of the course like? Do you find it tough to do social nights out and sports? Do they have university sports teams?
3) Are lab sessions difficult? I come from a course with little lab hours and I am most nervous I may struggle to keep up with other more experienced students within these sessions. Could you tell me the standard of everyone and are there others you know of who may have struggled to begin. I am now improving lab skills in the mean time.
4) Any other general stories/information would be greatly appreciated!!

Thank you, looking forward to some responses! :)

4 year MD program skype entrance exam

Hi,

On the website it states that the skype exam (for the 4 years MD program) consists of:
3 biology questions
3 chemistry questions
2 physics questions

I have a BSc in Biochemistry and we didn't do so much physics. 1 modules had some physics. I am a little worried about this exam because it was 2 years ago that I graduated and might have forgotten some biology and chemistry - going through all my modules to remember is not practical at all! Does anyone know if they have actually states which topics within chemistry and biology that are more likely to ask about. Also, what kind of physics questions are they likely to ask?

Thanks

6 yr Lodz just had Skype interview!!!!

Hello !

Has anyone else had the interview for 6 yr or 4 yr? Did you get accepted? Did you know all questions asked?
I have just had my Skype interview I am applying to the 6 year program as I am a high school graduate! :)
I got asked quite a few questions, the interview itself went very very well - I was very confident in this section so I think they were happy with me :D :D

but the science questions were a little tougher for me but I think I knew most of them,
They asked:

Biology
Process of protein synthesis- didn't really know to well mixed it up
Three cell organelles that have double membrane- knew 2/3
Functions of skin
How immune system works- antigens

Chemistry
what is Avogadro law - didn't know got confused with something else and gave them the wrong definition!
what is oxidation/reduction
What functional group is alcohols in
what types of bonds are in proteins/peptide bonds

I was a bit nervous :/ but I am straight from high school not college so hopefully I have a chance

Hey there! Is there anybody who has decided to study on 6year program in MUL? Let me just know:)

Got into 5DMD 2014 (About skype exam & overall staff)

To start off, I got enrolled into 5DMD 26/07/2014. I have received answer after skype exam in like a day, literally. Basically what should you consider learning and doing when taking skype exam. Also this is probably a really late post and will not be important just because deadline for submissions was 15 of July sooo yeah.

So maybe you have been researching on internet "How to get best first impression through skype interview". Well it's pretty easy.

Firstly be confident, smile and look at the camera from time to time and your dress code should be 'smart professional'. Prepare your 'station' where you will be sitting and taking exam. Try to have plain background so examinators will have an interest in you and not around you. Get your camera is a position when you will have space between your head and top of the screen, and your camera should finish just below your chest. Try to sit straight and look smart.

There are 2 parts of the exam, there is part with motivation questions, and there is part which will test your knowledge. Both of these parts will be doing 2 different people. Male & Female. Both of these parts are pretty easy. In first part you will be asked frequent question which is "What characteristics should have a doctor?" and well the answer is confident, empathetic, respectful, personal, forthright. If you don't know what empathetic means, well look it up because the next question the guy would ask is "What does empathetic mean?" and then you give brief explanation and you are good. Another question he may ask if you live in different country than you were born at is "What is the difference between hospitals in both of these countries". In here you have to research or ask parents.

When the guy will finish he will say that 'Now we move to the second part to test your knowledge' or something along the line. So they will swap sits and the lady will give her full name and bla bla bla. They will ask your about 3 questions each from whatever subjects you have chosen. If you chosen bio and chem study basic staff like components of blood. Plasma, Platelets, Red blood cells, White blood cells. What are they involved in. Both are involved in blood coagulations, and then rbc is for transport and wbc is a part of innate immune system and they engulf bacteria. Another thing to remind yourself is translation and transcription. You have to be able to explain these both processes briefly. If you want me to write what to say just message me. Another thing to remember is function of skin, water. Digestion of food, process. Brief explanation. Circulatory system, how heart collects and pumps blood. You have to know that firstly blood has low level of oxygen then its being sent to lungs (how, what chambers it goes through) and then it comes back from lungs same thing about chambers, and then that its being sent around the body.

Things known about chemistry. Firstly you need to know what is ph, what is atomic number. These 2 come up almost always. You need to know about radioactive decay, what is it. What is isotope, what does it have the same. Also, would recommend knowing basic reactions, like addition, reduction, decomposition.

I think I have explained pretty much everything, so good luck to you all.

Hey guys,

I'm a 6MD student. I strongly advise anyone who wants to ask any questions or has any doubts to ask questions on this forum! Many students use this forum to choose the university they will attend.

Remember, that if you have doubts or issues, please bring them to the attention of your administration, but also let them be known to your colleagues and students who are researching different schools to compare the qualities of these schools!

I would love to answer any questions about the education in MUL, the exams, day-to-day life etc.

Hey
Current UMED student here.

I'm no good at introductions, but I suppose ppl who research Eatern-European medical school have already made up their minds to go.

Just here to say...please don't go, for whatever its worth.

Check this out:
http://studymed.umed.pl

Recently the UMED (Medical University of Lodz) website has been updating rigorously to keep up appearances of their internationally renowned profile. As a current student I can't help but smile and feel a need to clarify some pieces of information. All university websites have to be taken with a grain of salt; they are ultimately marketing tools. BUT even the best universities need to showcase their achievements. Unfortunately for the Med Uni of Lodz (UMED or sometimes MUL...they can't make up their minds..it tends to get confused with Medical University of Lublin ) those achievements are limited, and must be fabricated, or exploited.

Just to break-down some of my personal favs:

1. I'm LUVIN' the dynamic banner that displays some nonsense buzz-phrases like "Students from 54 different countries!" Holy cow that's impressive.
Another one reads "Best and most modern clinical hospital in Central Europe." Cool, but Central Europe is not a place. If you consider Poland Central Europe, then just say Poland. So it should read "Best and most modern clinical hospital in Poland" Not to belay the point here, but this is unsubstantiated.
"The best sport organization among medical universities in Poland" Cool. This statement is again completely unsubstantiated, and the AZS (the sports organization) is NOT open to English division students. I mean not literally, but pretty much.
Another one says "Join the PreMed course, entrance without an exam." If they are being honest, why not say "Entrance to the university to all programs without the exam" This is a fact.
"One of the biggest medical universities in Poland" Size doesn't matter tho..and which is the biggest then? The bigger the university, the better the quality?
"Poland the biggest number of students in Europe just after the UK" What does that have to do with the medical school? This only strengthens the point that the school is a diploma mill!

70 years of tradition in medical education? more on that later....

What's better than nonsense banners? STOCK PHOTOS!!

The quotes from students are OK, freedom of speech i suppose...
but look:

Vanessa Pasztor's only claim is that at this University allowed her to meet people around the world...OK? You wouldn't get that from ANY other school?

Even more enraging is the quote by Dr. Leke , who's claim is the UMED students are a diverse group with creative minds and boundless enthusiasm?? How does that apply to 1. the quality of education 2. the accomplishments of these individuals, and more importantly 3. YOUR accomplishments!

Remember these are just 4 students.

2. The video.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F48HV1biONI

Give me a second here fam....

Let's break in down...script and cinematography..

"I have always dreamt of becoming a doctor."
Does that sentence make sense?
This dude is walking down the shopping district of Manufaktura. This mall has absolutely nothing to do with the University. But it's a nice shot..

"A friend from Poland told me about the Medical University of LOOdz. It gave him a solid education and a better shot for finding a job in the EU and beyond." Did this friend's solid education from Lodz help him get a job....as a doctor? Not clarified..
Just to be clear, where is "beyond"? Like ...Kazakhstan?
They won't say USA, Canada, Australia...that would be lying..
The shots of the kids in the library are nice, but this library opened THIS year, and was still a reno-job when i saw it in October 2016. There are virtually NO English language textbooks available for students, EVER. They have to be bought. I don't know how that girl found that Harrison's Internal Medicine book on the shelf. She probably put it there and went to retrieve it.
I digress.

"It's been a year since that conversation. " Cool, next we have a shot of a teacher with some TV screen. Never during my studies have we had class in the library...that would be pretty weird.
And what the hell are they watching??A CPR video? Why wouldn't you teach CPR on actual mannequins like they do in HIGH SCHOOL!!
On that note we have NEVER had a class with a TV, watching a movie. Especially not on that HD masterpiece the EU must have purchased for them for their new library. Still, very nice.

"I understand now that a great education is based not only on qualified staff, but also the use of modern technology, and the university's international character."
These guys are STILL IN THE LIBRARY! WHAT ARE THEY PLAYING, Wii? That one girl is reading 50 shades of grey or something..
Ok let's break down the quote. "Qualified staff" k you have me there. You are taught by Polish doctors. Polish doctors who know anything about the EU, or beyond??? no..
"Modern technology" is best utilized for Nintendo Wii in this case, really, because it isn't used during your studies AT ALL!
"University's international character" for being a diploma mill

A floating quote reads "70 years of medical education." In the Polish division fam!!!
And even this is misconstrued. Poland belonged for decades to the USSR and the universities in Lodz then were different, truly, to what you see today. The military faculty was the main one, and since they have broken into basically 3 different Medical school.
1. Military faculty - PL
2. Military faculty in Eng
3. Medical University of Lodz- PL
The First two are the Hallera based ones, with low standard of education, and the 3rd is NOT involved in the ENG-division AT ALL!

Next, a nice shot of the Hallera dorm. No propaganda here, its pretty nice. Although i find reading my recall books upside-down increasingly difficult...

"To this day, I am still grateful for my friend for telling me about the Medical University of LOOdz."
You see an auditorium, with floating heads. K this is the AULA 1000. You will see this ONCE during Welcome Ceremony or whateverthehell that is, and maybe one more time if you choose to go to grad. boom.

Next is the dentistry building. Pretty decent, reserved mainly for DMD students, however. It is in the didactic center. Those kids are MD students. i know that for a fact they have no idea what they are doing...

"This is the place i found everything that I have been looking for"
The GUY on the computer (NOT the running man) is the coolest teacher at the school. He is not Polish and not even a doctor, and what you see is the Dynamo-Lab, and physiology laboratory that is set up within the MUL, run by mainly PhD students of Physiotherapy and Physics departments. You will not set foot in this lab your entire time in MUL.

Next, students having lunch...again at MANUFAKTURA! A shopping center separate from the city.

Glad I was able to clear up some stuff!

3. Recent Events
I really love how they post stuff that happened after the fact.

Taiwanese Ambassador..k..

Cultural Soiree.

What is that. The Cultural soiree was organized ENTIRELY by an entity separate from the University called the MUL SGAA (Medical University of Lodz Student Government and Alumni Association) This group was created by US/Canadian/UK students studying at the university something like 6-7 years ago, and since then has been putting up the cultural soiree and the final year charity event. Now you might say that Universities world-wide have student unions that are self organized etc. Yes, that is true. But cultural potlucks usually aren't posted as Recent Events for the Universities achievements.
Ok so this is only for English division. Still... It was a potluck people.

Rector's award
It's a slippery slope, the Rector's award. I HATE to say what everyone is thinking, but the GPA calculations are not calculated based on any EU university standard, but calculated like HS quiz.
Some info came out in recent years that students that pass a class, with say a 4(B) can take the exam again, and get a 5 (A), which averages to 4.5. And a 4.5 is the minimum to apply for this rector's award. This practice should seriously be scrutinized, and would NEVER be accepted at an American school.
I genuinely wish to congratulate the students who won the award, i know it is deserved! But what i wrote isn't false.

Medical "University" of Lodz - For your consideration!

Hey,

I am a current UMED student trying to convince people to not attend this "university"...
All I can do is give you the truth.

My previous posts were about the UMED website, which i will continue here briefly.

NBME/CBS | Medical University of Lodz, Division of Studies in English

This is (hopefully) the UMED website link for the NBME/CBS examinations at the Medical University of LODZ English Division *whew* thats a mouthful.
Anyways, check it out.

Today(Dec 2016) as i'm looking at it, the page is a disastrous mess. As a current student, I'm gonna clarify some factoids..

What's bold is straight from the site:

"In 2006 the Medical University of Lodz – the Division of Studies in English obtained the accreditation of the National Board of Medical Examiners, a reputable American organization founded in 1915. Such an accreditation, which results in a wide access to commonly recognized NBME exams, is a real asset for our University and a way to implement objective assessment methods of medical students’ knowledge. " (UMED website)

Ok this doesn't really mean anything. This just means the the National Board of Medical Examiners gave UMED permission to test students using their NBME exams. This DOESN'T mean that the university is accredited in USA or anything. Not the same thing. Moving on..

"After the 4-year period of the flexible approach in their implementation, we have decided to adopt them on a larger scale in order to make students familiar with different examination systems and to let them excel in USMLE exams as well as in other international objective forms of assessment. " (UMED website)

Cool. So this isn't true, unfortunately, and we will see below. Claiming that the school has adopted NBME exams on a LARGER SCALE is not clarified AT ALL, and , if you want to play the statistics game, is perjury.
If you take all the exams that could be test with the NBME, it's something like:

-Behavioral Sciences
-Biochemistry
-Gross Anatomy only
- Gross Anatomy + Embryology
-Histology and Cell Biology
-Microbiology only
- Microbiology + Immunology
-Neuroscience
-Pathology
-Pharmacology
-Physiology

-Adult Ambulatory Medicine
-Clinical Neurology*
-Family Medicine Modular*
- Core
- Core + Chronic Care
- Core + Chronic Care + Musculoskeletal
-Medicine*
-Obstetrics and Gynecology*
-Pediatrics*
-Psychiatry*
-Surgery*

All these courses are technically integrated into the Medical University of Lodz program, and are they tested? Well, check out the list on the website...

- Behavioral Science is tested with NBME, and ONLY for the 4MD program?? WHY only the 4MD program?
- Microbiology is tested in the 6MD program, which is something relatively new..and not tested with 4MD program?
- Pathology and Pharmacology are the main-stay NBME exams at UMED, but to be brutally honest, people fail these, and then all the retakes, and then have to take the oral exam with the rector...like more than half the class. Many people retake these classes too.
- Ob/Gyn and Psych also mainstay NBME exams, and only for the 6MD. Again, people fail these like crazy.

The point is that this list is so exhaustive! Compared to the official list of NBME exams given above, the list is slim.

"Presently a large number of courses use the NBME exams as the final method of assessment which together with the comprehensive basic science (CBS) exams create a consistent and standardized examination policy." (UMED website)

It is clear this University has not only no idea, but no interest in being a USA accredited school, or preparing students for a career afterwards.

The CBS exam, therefore, is an esoteric exam, taken by few students, sometimes in secret, and the results are released to them alone. Here's the thing; you NEED the CBS to approach the USMLE Step1.

1.1. Student must obtain a score of 65 or higher in order to pass the CBS exam

There it is. A 65% score on a basically massive NBME exam must be obtained by students who, during their stay at UMED, will probably do a max of 5 NBME subject exams (I'm sure they do many more due to retakes! but its the same subject).

Actually preparing students for the NBME and CBS exams is against the interests of the university, since it would cost money to purchase these exams for the students, prepare the teachers and professors for teaching these courses, and that is nothing compared to the humiliation the university would feel when the statistics would come out about the gargantuan failure rates at this "International University"

Hey,
Current Lodz student here. Just trying to DETER(STOP) anyone from attending the Medical University of Lodz. Here are just some very true facts about day-to-day UMED life.

Why not hit up that sexy website of theirs : Medical University of Lodz, Division of Studies in English

This website was NOT around when I was applying...
Although I think many individuals might get confused seeing that it looks like the official website for a Kentucky Preschool.

The 6MD program is where it's at. The 4MD program is essentially the SAME as the 6MD program, only accelerated. The 5 DMD program is a mess from what I have heard. Respect to the uni for the fancy Didactic Center, but the Dentistry students' courses for Anatomy, Pathology, Micro etc. etc. are GROSSLY underwhelming and are laughable, even to the 6MD students.

Anywhoo, I clicked on the 6MD tab on the side

Basically nothing special, just general info. The juicy stuff you get at the bottom, with the blue links.
1. Booklist

This is ABSOLUTE crap. NONE of these books are required. Please hold off buying any textbooks, for ANY class. The BEST information that one gets is from the prof of the class , NOT forums or past students, since they want to sell you their copies.

DERP:evil:

2. Curriculum 6MD

This is where pooh pooh gets funny. This will open a Word document, thanks very much. I see PDFs are a true luxury unfortunately. All that clicking and converting can cause a real head rush.

First thing that strikes you is the list of classes for year 1. These are set in stone, no exchanges, refunds, nothing.
Something on the far right says ECTS points. What are ECTS points ????? I could explain to you , but idk.

Cuz no one really knows. ...

Someone somewhere knows, but no one that you will come into contact with during your studies will explain this to you.

Technically you need 60 ECTS points for one year of study. That's all there is to it? How are they allocated?
The ECTS points are ARBITRARY.. the sherlock in you is thinking "the more ECTS, the more hours" ..perhaps..but this is where it goes south..

The hours are NOT true hours, but 45 minutes. That's number 1. Next, the number of hours are GROSSLY exaggerated for EACH year, as you go up from 1st to 6th year. And I mean like Fun-house GROSSLY exaggerated. So are you doing 792 hours in first year? Barely...Based on some personal calculations from recent memory, these are estimated hours for each year :

792 in 1st year ...comes out to ..not bad, maybe 650
965 in second year....you come close
938 in 3rd year...more like an estimated 600
1076. in 4th year..wait for it...its actually like 650
1101 in 5th year...actually closer to 700
915 in 6th year...450

This might seem like nothing special, but remember that the medical councils of Europe are still trying to decide whether or not the 4MD program is legitimate due to the accelerated program and deficient hours for certain subjects!!
:clapover:

Nothing scandalous? Let's move on.

What is the difference between a credit and an exam? NOT MUCH actually, considering. Classes that end with an exam are supposed to have a serious exam, and the credit classes with a ..less serious "test."
NO. just no.

Which 1st year classes officially require an exam??

- Biophysics
- Gross anatomy and Neuroscience
- History of Medicine
- Medical Biology
- Medical Chemistry

I can tell you the exams for these classes are nothing different than the assessment for the "credit" classes. Why put this contradicting information on the website? It seems like a facade, some EU standard that must be met, and is no where close to what is in practice!!

Nothing i say will shock you if you are an adult who has seen the world and has some experience dealing with lying and conniving "for-profit" schools. But this school preys on HIGH SCHOOL students' naivete , and openly fabricates what appears to be transparent information about the school. SO the Curriculum, what does it entail?

Year 1
Biophysics, a disaster of a class, doesn't apply either physics or biology into any coherent entity. Powerpoint presentations that look like they were made by a dysthymic Polish grad student from the early 2000s, are very archaic and you will NEVER SEE ANYTHING YOU LEARN IN THAT CLASS AGAIN.

Biostatistics: this is NOT taught from the US books, but from powerpoints! WHY don't they use the NBME (US Medical Exam) book to prep you for this class? It's EXTREMELY important !! You need to know this stuff..The class is boring, un-engaging, and you will find yourself teaching yourself the material in your room 1 week prior to you CBS (mini Step1 exam)

First-Aid and Elements of Nursing : NO NURSING. Just state that right off the top. First- aid is similar to a high school class or if you ever took life-guarding courses as a teen. Actually, i would advise everyone to train as a life-guard since they will gain true, pragmatic knowledge of first aid. The class is just powerpoints. Doesn't it strike anyone that teachers who wish their students learned something ELABORATE and DRILL certain pieces of information, allowing for better retention? No..because teaching isn't actually part of anyone's agenda..No one's agenda. The exam in non coherent and a MCQ (multiple choice question) with one right answer..standard. There was NO practical exam on the mannequins when we passed the class.

Gross Anatomy and Neuroscience: So sad. So so so sad. This is meant to be the biggest course in the first year, and is so disastrously taught that it is a shame to say. The main prof, Topol, is the textbook definition of apathy, and I don't believe such an individual has ever has a calling for teaching and a life at a university. Watch his lectures. Every one. And just carefully watch how and why every teacher in this school behaves the way they do. It is due to people like him; enthusiasm and hunger for knowledge, inquiry and EVERYTHING that is meant to be born in young people entering university to explore and understand the world around is staunched, discouraged and so severely marginalized that it should have been a breaking point..The clinical classes are nothing to discuss. You stand is a freezing morgue with a stuttering teacher and a bag of meat and bones. Virtually USELESS. Recently the introduction of the E-learning has fallen short on the "Tech boom" that was meant to follow the Didactic Center opening..Pitiful.

History of Medicine: Such a fascinating class just taken and thrown in the toilet. A stuttering teacher, refusing to engage students, fails miserable to ignite any kind of passion towards the development of medicine and its technology. The powerpoints are so poorly made they should be used to teach a class on how NOT TO MAKE POWERPOINT presentations. HOW ARE THESE PEOPLE DOCTORS ??

Library Training : this is not a real class, this is literally a one day tour of the library. OOH maybe you will have a tour of the NEW library, WOW.now i'm jealous. It's good too, since students who are accepted into a medical school usually have never set foot in a library before, so...

Medical Biology: GOD i can't decide which one of these classes was worse. No textbook for this class, just presentations, and some practical nonsense, drawing birds and bees...literally. Teachers are rude as hell, and there are quizzes after each class. The teacher reads the results of out loud, causing students to turn on each other real fast..FUNNNN

Medical Informatics: I don't even remember...I think we had a class where they showed us what Microscoft excel was. Thank god for that.. since you NEVER USE IT AGAIN

Medicinal Chemistry: essentially high school chemistry...no textbook , just some crappy powerpoints..same crap with the quizzes, and teachers use classroom humiliation rhetoric to inspire learning.. Teachers have no idea that people come from all over the world with different standards of education and styles of learning, and just resort to passive aggression and rudeness..I swear i used Khan Academy to prepare for the quizzes

Sociology in Medicine: can't remember ..no textbook, just a teacher reading something about something. You will NOT write a paper, like i supposed you should in a real sociology class.

Introduction to Medical and Academic Professionalism: WOW ..probably the funniest class. not like LOL funny, but more in the ironic sense. The academic integrity and professionalism that they TRY to preach is so lost on their innate goal to admit and pass AS MANY students through the program as possible. ZERO scruples.
This is like 3-4 classes total, probably taught by a guy called JJ. You might draw a picture ...a mental map or something..

Polish: its a boring, sad language class...Not like HS tho. there are just some sheets that the teacher might give you..you learn to say "Hello" and "pencil"... If you are a polish speaker..its tricky. it changes year to year what they do with you. sorry, i guess with "70 years of tradition in medical education " and they can't figure out how to make 2 separate Polish classes

Physical Education: Yes, its a gym class, in the worst gym in the galaxy. They tell you to change clothes and then use a bunch of broken machines in a crammed room with the PL students.

Electives are all the same

Summer training: good god. you aren't trained to do anything. this is really 1-2 weeks where you walk around a hospital instead of being home with your family during the summer. the best way to describe the class is a glimpse of what you will be doing for the next 6 years of your life.
:faint:

Medical "University" of Lodz - Letters from the Dean's office

Hi
Current UMED student here. Here's just a gem that was e-mailed to us from the UMED administration. The scale of complaints that has begun to circulate the English division staff has clearly forced their hand to write this,
stongly worded letter. I would like to put in my 2 cents.

Dear Students,

We have recently received some signals from the teachers of different courses concerning their discontent related to the Student’s general attitude towards the educational process occurring in the frame of conducting classes as well as certain course organization.

It is based on the cultural and educational tradition that the teacher, being responsible for the teaching process and its outcomes, is the person who decides on the form, pace, time and the manner of conduct in the classroom.

It is also the teacher’s right and responsibility to define the course requirements, rules and regulations which they can naturally expect the students to act in accordance with.

Therefore, we would like you to be aware of the expectations towards you as the Students of The Medical University of Lodz who took an Oath to respect the teachers, principals of social and peer relationships and fulfill their obligations.

We truly hope that this email will help you comprehend the situation and adjust accordingly to avoid the necessity of use of disciplinary measures.

Bestregards
-----------------------
Directorof Administrative Centre of the Medical Studies in English

Just to be brief, since I am running out of energy here.

Discontent related to students' general attitude towards the education process?? This seems to apply to all the student complaints coming into the Dean's office due to the lack of effort from the teachers' side.

Course organization? LACK there-of to be frank, in many cases.

The lack of specifics in this e-mail makes it completely moot, and the Dean's office cannot send this kind of general email to all students and expect to produce a mass tranquility among the students! We don't know who or what this actually pertains to! I can guarantee you that the number of complaints certainly did not go down, whatsoever.

The email continues to state that the teacher is the person who decides on the form, pace, time and manner of conduct in the classroom. Agreed, but this is how I see it. Teachers do not decide themselves on the TIME of the classes, the Dean's office does. I elaborated in the Curriculum breakdown that the number of hours assigned to certain classes DOES NOT correspond to the actual hours conducted by the teacher. Is it the teacher's right to decrease the number of teaching hours for a course, going overtly against the instructions from the Rules and Regulations created by the University and corresponding to Regulations in the EU? Wow, such power.

Form, pace and manner of conduct are such vague ways to suggest that the teacher is given 100% "creativity rights" for each course. This is technically encouraged, but every teacher was educated the EXACT same way, care the exact same amount: NOT at ALL.

In addition to this, I might add, few courses have an NBME final exam, which, to the reasonable mind, suggests that the teachers must somehow change the "Form, pace and manner" to match a USA style exam and prepare students for it. The answer is no, since they themselves have no clue what the NBME exam entails, and they simply are happy they do not need to put together the final exam. Therefore, "NBME exam" for the teacher means "early summer vacation" since no marking or writing is required.

The email continued to state that it is the teacher's right and responsibility to define the course requirements. This isn't entirely true, however, since aren't there EU standards, or university standards? Actually, no. This is what allows teachers to cut large chunks out of the curriculum and TEST students however they wish. Doesn't it make sense for ALL POLISH med school have a standardized test for major subjects like BIOCHEM, ANATOMY, PATHOLOGY etc, just like the NBME is in the USA? NO! Again, medical school aren't invested in EDUCATING anyone..
When simple solutions aren't implemented, it raises eyebrows about the actual interest of these schools.

Current student here. I'm gnna clarify as much as possible about UMED.

Many aspects of the education seem functional on the surface, but are actually so broken that they are ingrained in the culture of the school, and have become part of its identity. More on that later.

I recently started a few thread entries. One main one that I started was the day-to-day classes in UMED, just to give more transparency when it comes to choosing a school.

I think trying to say "PLEASE don't attend an international med school! You will never get a job after!" is futile only because I know what I would have thought many moons ago..."This is some butthurt kid who doesn't study.." And listen. That's NOT untrue! There ARE lazy people who complain of education. Of course, we have to be objective. What goes on behind the school walls affects the lazy and hard working ALIKE. That's what I wish to share with you.

On the 6MD website, you will find the 6MD curriculum. It takes some snooping, but here it is.

Communication Skills
(dont remember..ill get back to you..but i could tell you with some confidence that this was probably a DUPLICATE class, of #2 on this list.)

2.
Patient-Doctor Interactions in Daily Practice
(so this class is taught in the new didactic centre, and is something akin to 'How to talk to patients." If you are thinking that this is one of those communication classes about how to strengthen your abilities to communicate and improve your self-esteem, like a self-help book, then no. Let me be clear:
1. By 3rd- 5th year, you virtually have NO MEDICAL KNOWLEDGE to communicate..so this class is ..how to talk?
2. Polish Medical doctors are NOTORIOUS for being rude and have a Paternalistic approach to medicine (i.e TELLING the patient what to do and not allowing for ANY discussion)
3. JUST powerpoints about how to talk...counter intuitive. seems evident to me but clearly not everyone.
3. THIS class is taught by psychologists, who stand before the class and just speak. They attempt to engage the class as much as possible, but to no avail since they do NOT propose any arguments that students can debate or discuss ! They just state facts..
4. This time should be better spent teaching 90% of the students to actually speak English)
20 (10)
Credit

( What was the assessment for this class? A presentation? A skit with a group of students acting out the proper method to communicate? A paper?

NOPE

teacher tells you to write what u think u learned in this class on a piece of paper.

automatic 5

3.
Laboratory Diagnostics
(a disaster of a class. you spend NO TIME IN A LABORATORY. ABSOLUTELY NONE. You sit in a classroom, with a teacher STUTTERING about the lab results present in anemia, liver conditions etc. The teacher(s) behaves as if he hasn't communicated with individuals of the human race before, and when spoken to privately about a personal medical problem, was discovered they had no knowledge of many aspects of lab results, which was infuriating and embarrassing!)
45 (30)
Credit

(painfully badly written quiz questions, don't bother to study for them, they count for nothing. the EXAM is MCQ, and everyone cheated voraciously.

The point here is this was an EXAM class...not a credit..wrong info...screwed a lot of students over)
2
4.
Pathology – PM (Pathomorphology)
(this class is taught in the new didactic centre. It is technically the most technologically advanced class since they advance from using presentations, to students sitting in from of a computer screen and watching presentation....wow.

Nearing the end of the semester, there were NO presentations, teachers got too lazy to create them.
The course, divided into lectures and classes, messes up the organization.Lectures are optional, and are the same boring nonsense as usual.
Classes end after 1 hour, and are just looking a digital slides of...cancer.
cancer EVERYWHERE

NO prep for the NBME ! NONE
You have to study SEPARATELY ALL YEAR FOR THE EXAM..sorry)
160 (100)
Exam

(The tests are COPIED and PASTED from one of two of the pathology question books:

Pretest or Robbins Review.

You are reading this and thinking.."nice"

NOO! This isn't high school, this is a serious landmark medical school course that you can basically cheat for the tests and get a fairly good mark..You will have NO KNOWLEDGE coming into the exam

The EXAM is NBME)
14
5.
Pathology – PPh (Pathophysiology)
(a mess of a class, different confused teacher every time.
Why isn't this combined with pathomorphology?
It's because they try to showcase the collegium anatomicum, that looks like a mental hospital in the 1800s, to try to seem like a "Harvard" school with an illustrious history. So SO sad.)
50
7
6.
Pharmacology & Toxicology
(BEST class at this school. Competency among the teachers and lecturers in refreshing, but at many time infuriating..since you get a tiny tiny glimpse of what a real teaching should be like..and then its gone , as quick as it came.

If i have one concern, it is that it is basically a high school class. There needs to be a distinction between uni and HS or else what is the point?)
140 (90)
Exam

(NBME, you don't technically prepare from NBME books all year tho..)
11
7.
Clinical Pharmacology
(A WASTE of a class. completely unnecessarily, You walk around a hospital with a doctor asking patients what meds they take! Here's the thing: YOU PAY for classes, that is true, but you also pay for the ability to prepare, and not have your time wasted with additional courses)
26

(A powerpoint presentation. OMG the TECHNOLOGY is blowing my mind. DUPLICATE topics from pharmacology..so people self-plagiarize a lot)

This isn't a real med school or anything)

Preventive Medicine
(a DUPLICATE class, the exact same thing as DIABETOLOGY in internal medicine in 4th year! same teachers, same presentation topics, the only extra stuff is how to avoid the flu and back pain. Classes end after 1 hour, or there are hour-long breaks where the teacher just vanishes)

Electives
(unnecessary time wasting, most of the electives are DUPLICATE classes that you will do later anyways or have already done, because there is no one willing to come up with an original syllabus for a class. just an attempt to make this school seem like a US-style school, where students get to "choose electives" NO. )

Summer training in the field of Internal Medicine- 4 weeks
(if you do this in LODZ, its only about 1-2 weeks, a few hours a day, doing nothing at the department, since most students cannot speak Polish. Most of the students falsify the document saying they completed this training in their "home countries" as they say it. What a mess)

Hi
Current student here. Here is a cute little email we receive from the "Dean's office" every Christmas, to get everyone in the Christmassy spirit..

Dear Student,

We were wondering if you could help us in promoting our University abroad.

If you are going home for Christmas and have some spare space in your luggage can
you drop by admission office (room no 110) and pick up some printed promotional materials
(booklets, leaflets), can you then hand them to your friends or live them at your High School.

Your help would be highly appreciated.
We’d love to know by return if you will come.

Best Regards/Pozdrawiam,

?????????

Well that gave me an aneurysm. I hope to God no one fell for this. Free advertising, and targeting young, high school students unsure of their future?

So classy..

If you are gonna advertise, pay for it yourself. It's not like you collect hundreds of thousands of EUROS from the English division students.

UMED a leap of faith?

Any news as to the family of the guy that fell out the window and died in the new dormitory a week after arriving here? According to the family he was pushed and was threatened previously by suspicious people, the school however blatantly accuses him of suicide despite not knowing him and having having been here only a few days. A Sikh student with a bachelors from Canada would come to start a new career in Medicine just to commit suicide?

A student takes a leap of faith to come to a new country to start a Medical career only for the school to say he literally did a leap of faith to jump out the window of his dorm room to commit suicide.

The truth about studying abroad (lodz)

Current UMED student here.

After reading so many posts about this school (good or bad), living in Poland, and the different complaints, I feel the need to give my opinion on studying at this university and in general, ANY university abroad.

First I want to discuss the curriculum at this school. If your a student coming from North America, you will find that the curriculums here in Poland are not so similar to the ones in North America. Not to mention if you compare the 6MD program with the 4 year medical programs in North America, you better expect there to be several differences in the courses and the time allotted to the courses in these programs. Don't think you will get the same education in Poland as you would in the States for example. That being said, the medical Universities in Poland are directed to train people to be able to practice IN POLAND. THIS DOESN'T MEAN THAT YOU WOULDN'T HAVE THE ABILITY TO GO BACK HOME AND PRACTICE THERE. The university gives you the resources that you need in order to build a resume to go back to your country (eg. NBME exams, Steps, electives abroad), but they do not force this on their students, so it is up to the students to take the initiative themselves in their learning and direct themselves to their goal (whether it is to go back home or stay in Poland or in Europe etc). In fact, in the english division, most students are planning to return to their homes to practice and you will find the students that are serious about their post-graduate plans are taking the time and effort needed to reach their goals, and because of that effort, they end up reaching them. This is called "self-learning" and is a necessary skill to have in the field of medicine. Just remember, it is always recommended to study medicine in the country in which you wish to practice in. Do your research before attending a school, and don't expect to receive the same level of education anywhere for that matter.

TO ALL THOSE LOOKING TO STUDY MEDICINE:
As a student at this university (almost graduating), I've come to learn that I must take my education in my own hands. That means if I wish to change something, I do my best to get that done. If I wish to take my STEP 1 USMLE exam I'll put in the extra hours to study for it even if the curriculum isn't directed towards taking this exam. If I'm planning to return to North America, I'll put in the effort over the summer months to make connections and gain experience that would help better my resume. No matter which school you go to, if it is out of the country in which you wish to practice in, you must put in the effort to be competent enough to compete with those studying in that country (hope this makes sense). As a student here, I know what is coming for me when I apply back home. No matter what school I would have attended, I knew that I would have to do whatever it takes to make myself a competent candidate in the country I want to practice in. I know people who have attended this university and graduated, and are matched in the US and Canada. I know students who are practicing surgeons in Ireland and several doctors in the UK. I also know how hard working each one of those graduates are, and I know now what it takes to make it and I definitely know that it's possible.

I also want to address some of the posts that sound quite defaming to the Medical University of Lodz. Every university differs in how they teach, their teaching conditions, and their curriculum in general (from country to country). Don't just listen to rumours as those are easy to start and spread and are just that - rumours. Everyones experience in university is dependant on them and how they make of it. You can choose to come up with hundreds of reasons as to why you shouldn't have come here, or you can choose to look at why you decided to come here and what you can do to get out of here with what you want. If your not enjoying the experience here at the university, you are not forced to stay. If you find that going abroad was not the right decision for you, it's never to late to change your path, trust me. Medicine is a life-long career and if you don't put in the time to find out your path, you may find yourself regretting the field overall.

In the end I want to say that no matter what school you choose to attend abroad, just know that if you wish to practice at a prestigious hospital anywhere around the world (e.g US, Canada, UK,) you will have to go above and beyond what any university offers you in order to appear as a competent candidate. Do your research, choose a university that suits you, put in the time, put in the effort and you will be surprised what you can achieve no matter where you go. If you want it bad enough, you will get it.

Also, it is one thing to give facts about a university by stating your honest opinion and it is another thing to defame a university by repetitive posts that state rumours and untrue facts that are purely directed at discouraging people from attending this school. That doesn't help anyone, including yourself.

P.S. maybe the reason why you are not satisfied or are not going in the direction you want to go is because you spend so much time on forums trying to convince the internet not to attend this university??
